Kennedale Wildcats are the 2008 State Champs! Photos by Scott Roland
The Wildcats entered the Frank Erwin Center for the first time in school history and faced the Silsbee Tigers who came in with a record of 21-6. Through strong defense and a face-paced offense, they were never outscored in any period. At halftime the Wildcats led the Tigers 35-31. Brad Hubenak owned the glass, snatching 13 rebounds and putting up 14 points. Kiefer Hohenburger led all scorers with 20 points including 3 three-pointers. Dominque Harris and Brad Davis both had 12 points and Ryan Hoover donated 11 points while shooting 83% from the field. Final score: Kennedale 81 Silsbee 68.
This would set the stage for a chance at history. A chance for the 2008 Wildcats to become the State Champions.
Their opponents were the Burkburnett Bulldogs who entered the game with a record of 31-7. In the first period it was all Dogs as they pressed hard on defense and forced 6 turnovers. The Wildcats were able to claw their way back in the second but trailed 36-33 at halftime.
In the locker room Brad Hubenak had this to say to his teammates: “We need to stay calm, limit the turnovers and just play our game.” And in the third that’s exactly what they did, outscoring the Dogs 17-4. But the Dogs weren’t ready to lie down yet. They began to press again in the fourth and caused 9 turnovers that led to quick points and they outscored the Cats 14-4 in the fourth. The score was tied with 18 seconds to go as Kennedale played for the last shot. Dominique Harris drove the lane and got off a shot with 2 seconds left. The shot was off but Dominque grabbed the rebound and shot again as the buzzer sounded. “NO SHOT” rang out by the referee and the Cats and Dogs would have to go to overtime to determine the 3-A State Champions.
In overtime, Brad Hubenak hit 2 free throws and a layup and the Wildcats found themselves with a 3-point lead and only 14 seconds on the clock as Burkburnett attempted a tying 3-pointer. The shot was off but a questionable foul call would send Desmond Strickland to the free throw line with 3 shots. Nothing but net on all three and the score was tied again. Time out Kennedale. Coach Groff set the play and hoped to penetrate the lane with Dominque for the game winner or to draw a foul. “I just wanted to win anyway possible,” said Dominque after the game. They inbounded the ball with 8 seconds to go but as Harris drove the lane, the defense collapsed on him and he dished the ball to Brian Davis who laid it up and in as the horn sounded and the clock hit zero. WILDCATS WIN!
Brian was named Most Valuable Player and the Kennedale fans cheered “We love you Brian” as he left the court. "We’ve played well all year and regardless of how this game turned out, this is exciting!” Coach Groff said. “All I ever wanted for these guys is for them to be as successful as they possibly can be. I’m proud of these guys.” Final score: Cats 61 Dogs 59
